What is closed cell spray foam insulation?+
Closed cell spray foam is a two-component polyurethane foam that expands on contact and cures into a rigid, dense material. It achieves R-6 to R-7 per inch of thickness, achieves vapour barrier performance at 2 inches or more in most assemblies, and bonds permanently to wood, concrete, steel, and most building substrates. Unlike batt insulation, it fills gaps and irregularities completely and does not compress, settle, or absorb moisture over time.
Why does Victory Insulation only use closed cell foam?+
Closed cell is the better product for Ontario's climate and for the applications we work on. It delivers higher R-value per inch, acts as a vapour barrier built in, adds structural rigidity, and performs correctly in moisture-prone areas like crawl spaces, rim joists, containers, and steel buildings where open cell foam would absorb water and fail. We specialize in closed cell because it is the right product for the vast majority of Ontario applications. We do use open cell in select situations - interior wall soundproofing, drain quieting in high-end homes, and drill-and-fill work in balloon-framed houses. What R-value does closed cell spray foam achieve?+
Closed cell spray foam achieves R-6 to R-7 per inch installed. Two inches on a rim joist delivers approximately R-14 in a cavity where batt insulation cannot even fill properly. Three inches on a flat roof assembly hits R-21 before any additional insulation is added. This makes closed cell the only practical choice in thin assemblies like rim joists, cantilever floors, container walls, and vehicle builds where you cannot afford to lose inches to a lower-performing product.
Does closed cell spray foam act as a vapour barrier?+
Yes. Closed cell spray foam at 2 inches or more meets vapour barrier requirements in most Ontario assemblies when using an approved product. In many applications this eliminates the need for a separate poly vapour barrier and is one of the primary reasons closed cell is the right product for crawl spaces, rim joists, exterior walls, and container interiors where moisture is a factor.

How long does spray foam insulation last?+
Closed cell spray foam is a permanent installation. It does not compress, settle, rot, or absorb moisture. It does not provide food for mold or pests. Once installed correctly, it maintains its R-value and air sealing performance for the life of the building or structure. There is no maintenance required and no degradation under normal conditions. This is one of the key advantages over batt insulation, which loses effective R-value over time through compression and air movement.
Can spray foam be installed in an existing home?+
Yes. Most of the work we do is retrofit - existing homes where batt or blown-in insulation is underperforming. Attics, crawl spaces, rim joists, cold rooms, and basement walls can all be spray foamed in an existing home without major renovation. In some cases existing insulation is removed first, in others the spray foam goes over top. We assess each project and tell you what makes sense before any work starts.
What types of attics can be spray foamed?+
We work on all attic configurations - standard walk-up attics, flat and low-slope roof assemblies, cathedral ceilings, vaulted ceilings, knee wall attics, and attic hatch surrounds. The approach depends on the roof assembly. Some attics are foamed at the roof deck to create a conditioned attic space. Others are foamed at the floor level. The correct approach depends on roof construction, ventilation, and how the space is used.
What is a cold room and can it be spray foamed?+
Cold rooms are the uninsulated storage rooms built under front porches in many older Ontario homes - typically concrete or block walls with no thermal barrier. They are one of the biggest sources of heat loss and moisture problems in homes built before the 1980s. We spray closed cell foam on the cold room ceiling, walls, and door assembly to convert it from a heat sink into a properly conditioned space. This is one of the most cost-effective spray foam upgrades in an existing home.
Can you spray foam a shipping container or sea can?+
Yes. Shipping container insulation is one of our specialty applications. We spray the interior walls, ceiling, and floor rib cavities with closed cell foam. Containers need closed cell specifically - steel sweats heavily with temperature changes and open cell foam would absorb that moisture and fail within a few seasons. Closed cell bonds directly to the steel, stops condensation at the wall surface, and gives you usable interior R-value in 2 to 3 inches of thickness. Can you insulate a van conversion with spray foam?+
Yes. Van conversions are a regular part of our work. We spray the walls, ceiling, and wheel well areas of cargo vans being converted to camper vans, mobile offices, or mobile living spaces. Closed cell is the right choice for vans - it bonds to the steel shell, acts as a vapour barrier, delivers high R-value in the thin cavity space available, and does not trap moisture between the shell and the interior build-out the way some other insulation products do.
Can you spray foam a quonset hut or agricultural steel building?+
Yes. Agricultural and steel buildings are one of our core application areas. Quonset huts and steel buildings have notoriously bad condensation problems with bare steel interiors. Closed cell spray foam applied directly to the interior steel shell eliminates condensation, provides a high R-value, and creates a usable interior without the need to frame interior walls first.
